even if the technology behind ais came from the alternate world, the individual ai instances are still man-made on our side, so feeling nostalgia when "returning" doesn't make sense.

You're mistaking the point a little. They aren't AI, they're actual living creatures from the alternate world who were made into AI in modern world

Why do I get the feeling that Tortch is the A.I. responsible for the whole machine uprising that led to the massive restrictions place on all future generations of Makina type units. Mr. Skynet wannabe himself. The A.I. that fell in love. Mr. Big Daddy Terminator.
