the western equivalent would be king solomon's splitting of the baby. i honestly expected souya to offer to split him for them :p or after he saw them almost splitting him themselves, to conclude they're both no good. for it to end with the man being no good instead was a bit of a twist.its unrealistic though. a con-man that's already conned them wouldn't bother keeping up the pretense of not wanting to hurt them. and even if he was still working them, he's had enough other victims to realize that losing one or two marks would be preferable to involving other adventurers by asking for help. he'd just pretend to pick one or even nobly give up on both and move on. its another bad writing example by the author

the need to keep track of his cons in writing is also an absurd idea. just the author hand-waving away a nonsense plot device. one has to track exact "borrowed" amounts only if they actually intend to return them.
