Unripe citrus does smell different from ripe citrus, more woody/green. These days, the essential oil Petitgrain is extracted from the leaves and branches of the bitter orange tree, but it used to be made from the small green unripe fruits, thus the name.

I believe the wolf and grape thing is due to an Aesop's fable, though the fable uses a fox instead. A fox goes to a vineyard and sees how sweet and juicy the grapes are, but it can't jump high enough to reach them. Eventually, it leaves, saying "I bet they were sour anyway." The wolf here wasn't able to get the grapes by himself but he found something better anyway :)
