The "fog" comes out of the volcanoes and it's mixed with some spiritual power to makes natural barrier around the continent. It's not our world's science and common sense, it's theirs and what we called as "world settings" or "world building". The mention of spiritual power in the fog with special purpose is enough to explain the oddity of it. It's thick on the ocean and thin on their land because its main purpose is to be barrier against invaders, not to hinder its own residents' activities.

Probably so they can communicate with humans who are the most numerous and violent (except Devils). All the other races except Devils have lower birth rates despite their longer lives.
