This author seems to forget their own story sometimes. Like the Black City arc: its introduced as a place that doesn't ask if someone has money, or whether they can afford something, as they won't look down on anyone. Cut to 2 chapters later, we get us the shopkeeper judging its customer for looking poor, telling them they can't afford an item

*Spoiler*The way Tang Nazhi explains the Barren Land and the people within it completely contradicts how they actually are later in the novel, here he says the 3 were victors of the tournament and get a special privilege of ignoring the imperial family. But in actuality the 3 successful people are from other countries. The author just threw out that continuity.

Classic chinese novel starting line cliche. Basically, every single MC tends to start from the worst place; from the weakest family, from the weakest institution, from the weakest continent, from the weakest race etc.
