they had so many years to build a fucking fortress right outside the entrance to the underworld. What the hell was shen siyu doing? Put like like cannons on a big ass wall pointed at the gate. and like a big ass pit right beneath the entrance with like snakes in it and shit

But, Siyu has built a "fortress" there. He made big God's Domain, trained the best human cultivators, and stationed god's envoys all years round near the gate (he even sent some of them to underworld). Everytime the seal was weakened, he would reinforce it. It's just that the "fortress" (base camp of god's envoys) was destroyed one year ago by devil's (Satan's?) attack and he abandoned it because holding onto that region (just by the god's envoys and his own demigod power) would be a lost cause in front of Satan's power at that time.
