I first know about this tactic when I read "Hikaru no Go" when the protagonist must compete with schools which have stronger players. It's slightly different as they let their weakest player to play against the opponent's strongest player. But, the principles is the same: it's to let the team get the over-all victory and it also doesn't mean their weakest player can casually lose the play.
