Yep. It's either the author forgot about it or the word was somehow mistranslated. I often read in mtl where a fiance was called "wife". They even sometimes called gf or the love interest as "wife". There's also possibility that the wife he's talking about has already died. I agree that "stole something precious from his wife" sounds better and concise. But, it also sounds like the wife was living in the residence. So imo, "stole something precious which belongs to his wife" was more neutral as it's still suitable either he's single, married, or widower. Read more

Being a loner doesn't prevent him having a living wife. I am an introvert loner and hide in my room much of the time but have a spouse and kids! It could merely mean that he little or no connection to those outside his inner circle which may be him and his wife and the father.

Honestly might as well not concern yourself with whether their wives exist or not. Background characters are on and off in this and their wives definitely don’t exist😂
