Jeez. She is pretty lame in this case. If we look at things in reverse of how it is written and thought about by the two girls, we have:When the wind picked up, the sound got louder. When the wind died out, the sound went away. So obviously, it is caused by the wind blowing over or through something, much like a clarinet, flute, saxophone, etc. probably into something that amplifies or changes it in some way to make it spookier.
