The author is really ruining the value of the money.Apparently a family can live off 5 gold coins for possibly half a year and yet a slave cost 500 gold, it doesn’t make sense

Pretty sure it still is, however his perception of value has been warped due to recent success paying lots of gold. I think this was suggested when he handed her 5 gold. I could be wrong though, grammar in this story is shoddy at best.
