Postpartum depression is a very serious and scary thing if not treated which during this era was very difficult to diagnosis. I feel sad for Mama Gu and Jinyu since Mama Gu instinctual know something was amiss on top of the Postpartum.

I suffered from postpartum depression and at one point I had a lack of affect (unable to feel) and I remember staring at my baby lying there and feeling nothing and thinking I was a terrible mother to be unable to take joy in my baby. It haunts me to this day, despite knowing that it was essentially a chemical imbalance in my brain. So I totally relate to this. Even were they mother and daughter postpartum depression can make bonding difficult.
