From what I read the mark is made from female geckos fed on cinnabar. The hormones? released from having sex will react with gecko's hormones? to neutralise the colour, thus the mark disappears. That's the theory anyhow. I can't remember where I found the explanation though.

I was also discussing this with my bf yesterday. The conclusion I came up with is that it was a scam and tradition simultaneously, and also that if it worked in this story, it's only because of supernatural elements.
