I can't tell if people are being sarcastic about the good manners thing! I come from a culture where meals are a time for talking to each other such that the government recommends all families try have at least one meal a day as a family where no tv is on, in order to promote ease of family communication. I would find it very uncomfortable to eat an entire meal in silence.
