It's a realistic portrayal of how many people viewed adoption at the time and some people still view adoption. If this attitude didn't exist we wouldn't need orphanages/care homes as all orphans or kids who couldn't live with their birth parents could be adopted. Many people worry about whether they will love their child and are afraid they couldn't love a child not blood related to them. I think if we could just teach people that family is a feeling rather than a blood relationship it would solve a lot of issues.

God I hate hate the way chinese novels talk about adoption there's always this discussion about being strangers or white eyed wolf it makes me sooo mad like adoption is not real and can't have real feelings involved between parent-child

I never got why they have this notion. I mean of course there would be some people like that but modt would be grateful to their adopted parents if they're treated as if they are their own child. And you have just as many ungrateful biological children. In the first place relationships don't have much to do with wether you're biologicaly related or not.

The concept of blood being thicker than water has been prevalent throughout history in essentially all parts of the world. Adopted children were seen much the same in the western world until fairly recently. (I'm talking recent as in within the last hundred years. See the stories of orphan trains sent throughout the American West even into the 1920's.) Some were adopted specifically because the parents wanted/needed more help on the farm or perhaps absolutely had to have an heir inorder to preserve the family heritage. In these cases the child was there to fill a role, not gain the love and caring of the parents. It doesn't surprise me at all that the ancient Chinese view on blood/non blood related children is much the same.To clarify I'm not supporting the concept. I myself have closer bonds with my chosen family than some blood relatives. But it's an unfortunate fact that this was and still is the prevailing view of society.Read more
