Since the text mentions Gu Jiao taking a piece out of the box and putting it on the field, shouldn't the game in question be Go, rather than Chess?

Iirc it's often translated as Chess because that's the closest western comparison. Just saying it's an ancient Chinese game doesn't give the reader much context unless they are already familiar with it.
